DRAKE - NOTHING WAS THE SAME (Album Review)
"My sophomore I was all for it, they all saw it………….. My junior n senior will only get meaner" - The Ride
Very few artist can dive wholeheartedly into a new project and record with the inspired vitality of a start up. Aubrey has loved the process as much as the end results an therefore once again fails to disappoint any of his loyal fans with NWTS.
On a track-track basis NWTS pales in comparison to Take Care & Thank Me Later, Drake’s first two solo albums, although his impact on the culture has never been more prevalent than now. The tracks that have surfaced from the album up to this point have been enticing to say the least a bit more so than prior to any other release. Started From The Bottom, Hold On We’re Going Home, No New Friends, 5 am in Toronto, Jodeci Freestyle, The Motion and the remix to Migos’ Versace-Versace all have given fans a fix for their earbuds until the actual release of NWTS.
Tuscan Leather is the LPs first cut, sampling a Whitney Houston classic, “I Have Nothing” into a soulful kanye west like track with range n change is like ear-porn. References to his cash money allegiances from the inset “I’ll compromise if I got to, I have to stay wit the family” & ” I’m just as famous as my mentor…….but that’s still the boss don’t get sent for”
Removing all doubt on where his heart and loyalties lie, as well as taking time addressing issues such as Kendrick Lamar’s attempt at a hip hop PSA.
Songs like “Furthest Thing” & “Worst Behavior” are Drakes’ conscious effort of breathing new styles into the game. On the former Drizzy sneaks you into his vices and the things that make him “the furthest thing from perfect like everyone I know” Worst Behaviour is one of my favorite cuts, the flow, the chorus the beat all mesh together greatly to craft something new for your ears.
While records like “Own it” “305 to my City” lack the necessary pizzazz in order to be timeless, I still feel they were crafted beautifully as reprises to the previous tracks in the set, but in my personal opinion songs omitted from the album would have move the message of the LP along much better.
Drake has struck platinum again on Nothing Was The Same with instant smashes like “Hold on We’re Going Home, The Motion, both feature heartbreak Drake the gyal dem sugar. Too Much feat Sampha is a dark introspection into the mindset of an artist obsessed wit success and the stress which accompanies it all. The Language feat Birdman and In Time featuring Jhene Aiko both have the capacity to be anthems amongst both sexes this winter. Come Thru, another of my favorites is another song on the list of classics drake has delivered so early in his young career.
Pound Cake/ Paris Morton 2 features Jay-Z in extended duty with a 500 million dollar soliloquy, where he claims to have “made more millionaires than the lotto did” coupled with a Wu Tang - CREAM like chorus this should be playing from car speakers til Christmas. All Me featuring Big Sean & 2 Chainz is also a banger in the normal sense of rap bangers these day, hot beat, hotter artists an a sing songy chorus about how well you’re living, pretty simple isn’t it……try it!!
Overall Nothing Was The Same is pretty much typical Drake but Drake doing Drake is usually great. The singles alone should send all your favorite radio rappers including Drakes own label mates running back to the drawing board. An although he was aiming to convince us all “NWTS” luckily some things cannot be easily changed, like top spot on billboard an #1 on iTunes.
